Abstract Applied geography is based on the theories and methods of geography and is the extension of pure academic geography, induding two important stages of evaluation and implementation. Value andlysis plays a great role in applied geography. In the West counties, the research fields of applied geography are: (1) environment and natural resources; (2) planning and construction; (3)culture and society. Some various characteristics of research work include: closely cooperating with government and enterprises;focusing on the solution, of actual wnd pressing issues;laying a special emphasis on regional stadies and assessment and implementation of plans and policies.
